During this part, I have chosen to analyze one of the famous movies named <The Silence of the Lambs> which was filmed by Jonathan Demme published in 1991.
First of all, I want to analyze one scene in the movie <The Silence of the Lambs>: Scene：48’47’’ to 49’43’’.Time：1minite 4second.As we knowing that full -length shot is same with the audiences’ viewing time, which can increase the sense of reality.The audience will more concentrate on the movie.
The director used a full-length shot to express the house of murderer. When the scene showing around the house, the audience also will follow the scene.First, the scene started at the death’s head moth, stop nearly 2 seconds, and then moved right slowly the picture transect to the butterfly fly into the scene.Furthermore, the scene keeps moving into the house like people are looking it, a set of knife, plastic women’s model and so on with darkness and disordering than the scene stopped at a people sitting in a chair in the middle of the picture, he was doing something.The audience must want to look the murder’s face, the camera close to the murder.However, the director does not want to show his face that quickly, then the scene turn to a running dog, it stopped in front of the mouth of a well and a girl yelling inside.In addition, the story will present the girl’s appearance in the news report.We can easy can see the director is creating the tension’ environment and the sequence the story really well, which can draw the audience’s attention and concentrate on the movie.
Furthermore, Long focus lens can emphasize the facial expressions.The movie of <the Silence of the Lambs> used numbers of the long focus lens to shot the two protagonists’ conversation and also illustrate their psychology. The long focus lens can close-up film the actor’s facial expression. Off course, these two protagonists are really profession to expression the psychology in a delicate way, especially to the Hannibal. Because every expression of the actors can represent inside of their thinking.
Moreover, let’s explain the light in this movie when the woman protagonists entrance the murder’s house, the murder turns off the light and trying to touch her. In this part, only the murder can see the woman protagonists, the color in the movie only have the green and black light that is the director wants to create an atmosphere to emphasized the tension and nervous to the audience.Because the murder controls everything in this house the audience will worry more about the protagonists during the dangerous.
In conclusion, the film of <The Silence of the Lambs> is at 27 top movies on IMDb which is a really great film in our world. Whether it is in commercial or artistic achievements. In my opinion, the photography techniques are quite unique in the shooting area, because it combines a lot of ideas when the director is shooting. As for a commercial film, it is difficult to find similar great film.
